National Education – A Platform to Make a Personal Commitment to the Defense and Security of our Nation

The concept of Total Defence (TD) was introduced in 1984 to highlight to Singaporeans the different things that we can do everyday in every sector of our society to strengthen our resilience as a nation.

National Education is a platform for Singaporeans to discuss and think about what it means to be a Singaporean.  Through National Education, people are made more aware of our unique circumstances as a nation, and as a people.

Our economic prosperity and social harmony is however based on our security as a nation.  National Education provides us the platform to discuss these matters and think through the personal commitment each of us makes to the defense and security as our nation.

“When Singaporeans take personal responsibility for and get involved in the defence of Singapore, they are playing their part to help keep Singapore safe and secure.”

Kapap National Education (NE) Programme

Kapap is ‘Krav Panim El Panim’ or Hebrew for ‘face to face combat’. It is a personal protection/ self defence system that was first developed in the 1940s by the Israeli Special Forces to nurture courage amongst its warriors in the face of battle and possess the hand to hand combat skills to fight in life or death situations.

Until as recent as 2001, Kapap was only taught amongst the Israeli Special Forces, but over the years, Kapap has become an international and modern self defense/ personal protection approach that transcends religion, race and nationality.  There are kapap centres present in nearly 20 countries in the world -  all committed to the social mission of ‘empowering ordinary, law abiding citizens with realistic personal protection skills in order to keep safe.’

Our Training Approach

Kapap Academy Singapore, has been a partner with a number of schools in making the National Education more meaningful and personal for our young to play a part in the Total Defense of our nation.

This is possible through a ground breaking programme that had been pilot tested in a number of pioneering schools like National Junior College, Victoria School, and Yishun Town Secondary School, Nanyang Girls' High School, Hwa Chong Institution – where the students learn to take responsibility for their personal safety through the practice of Kapap while developing greater resilience.

Our Training Approach is to combine the educational benefits of knowledge (in bio-mechanics, psychology, crime prevention etc) with the ‘thrills and spills’ of easy to learn but yet effective self defense skills. Students, for example, learn to use simple mental skills to achieve greater resilience, study videos on actual crimes committed as part of crime prevention, learn bio-mechanics and principles of physics which a person can harness to overcome a bigger and stronger assailant without resorting to the use of excessive force.

Through such an experiential approach, students learn to make the National Education message come alive -‘Its Personal, Play your Part’.
